Rylatt, R.M. Surveying the Canadian Pacific - Memoir of a Railroad Pioneer, University of Utah Press (Salt Lake City, 1991)

Rylatt was hired as commissariat for Walter Moberly's survey party 'S'. This book tells of his adventures traveling from New Westminster to the East Kootenays, then north to the end of the Howse Pass during the 1871 season. The party moves north to east end of the Yellowhead pass during the 1872 season. When he hears of his wife's death, he and another man travel west down the North Thompson to Kamloops during 1873. Very interesting reading.
