Jared S. Hurd was an explorer and surveyor for the Canadian Pacific Railway surveys.

He arrived in California via Panama. He did some mining in Nevada before becoming involved in the land surveying department of Washington Territory. His father, Davis Hurd was an engineer in Niagara County, New York.

The Hurd family was aquintated with the Trutches (see John Trutch, Joseph Trutch) through the Oregon and Washington General Land Offices.

In 1871, he led 'U' (under John Trutch's supervision) on its survey between Lytton and Eagle Pass.
